In June 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate on a project that posed the age-old question: should we meet our heroes? The project involved devising and photographing an album cover for Bernie Marsden, the legendary founder member of Whitesnake, for his final album “Working Man.”
Given the freedom to propose the concept for the album art, I embarked on a journey of creativity alongside the label Conquest Records. My vision cantered around an aged van or truck carrying musical equipment, symbolizing the essence of a “working man” on the road of life.
With Bernie’s global recognition in mind, it was essential to incorporate imagery and brands that resonated internationally. Thanks to the remarkable efforts of Alan Bambrough from Conquest Records, we secured a 1951 Chevrolet 3100, its rusted patina adding soul and character to the scene. Bernie generously lent us one of his iconic guitars and amplifiers, enhancing the authenticity of the setting.
Our photoshoot took us to a picturesque location near former RAF Little Horwood, where we transformed the landscape into a timeless backdrop. Despite a brief shower that only added to the ambiance, the shoot proceeded seamlessly, capturing the essence of Bernie’s music and spirit. The site had once been a runway during World War 2, offering a long, straight and unmarked road that could be identified as an unidentified highway.
Following the shoot, I had the privilege of visiting Bernie in his home, surrounded by his extraordinary collection of guitars and records. Despite his declining health, Bernie’s warmth and humility shone through as we conversed in his music room. It was a wonderful moment getting to know such an open and humble human being, not just the guitar hero I heard growing up.
I had planned a ninety-minute portrait shoot of Bernie in this room of musical wonder, however we wrapped up the session prematurely due to fatigue. Bernie and his wife Fran continued to host us, sharing stories and experiences long after the cameras were put away. Meeting Bernie was an unforgettable experience, reminding me of the importance of connecting with our heroes on a personal level.
Tragically, Bernie Marsden passed away on August 24th, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of fans and musicians. His album “Working Man,” released posthumously, achieved remarkable success, reaching the top 40 in the UK album charts and number 2 in the Jazz and Blues charts.
Meeting Bernie reaffirmed my belief that encountering our heroes can be a transformative experience, offering insights into their humanity and resilience. I get to meet a lot of talented artists in my photographic adventures, and I have found it necessity to approach them as a human being, and not as the stars we see in the media. Set expectations to zero, and follow the golden rule of life –
Though his passing left a void in the music world, I remain honoured to have crossed paths with Bernie Marsden, such a remarkable individual.
