We explore the beautifully restored Victorian Crossness Pumping Station as a stunning backdrop for a promotional photoshoot. Featuring fantastic musical talents Alice Armstrong, Jimmy Regal and The Royals, and Mississippi Macdonald, we look to find a way to make profession photoshoot at a unique and sought-after location, in the most affordable ways possible.
Recently, I had the pleasure of completing a promotional photoshoot at the Crossness Pumping Station, a beautifully restored Victorian building located in southeast London. This Cathedral in the Marshes boasts stunning ironworks, huge engines, and stained windows that have stood the test of time. Based on the south bank of the River Thames, the building is designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette.
Location: Crossness Pumping Station, SE London (UK)
Lighting: LED floor lights x 2 (gatefold), LED lamp with parabolic diffuser
Challenges: Constantly changing natural light, moving around safely and quickly in an industrial area, motivating those around to help make the most of our time.
We shot around several locations inside the main pumping station hall, therefore providing a stunning backdrop for three acts that attended that day. Each corner or part of machinery in the venue had different lighting and emotions, which made sure each artist could benefit from a setting in tune with their personal branding. Likewise, wardrobe was left under their control to maximise their personality and connection to the shots.
Thanks to the efforts of the Crossness Engines Trust, much of the original ironwork, including some colourful pieces, is still intact. Some of the ironwork has also developed a beautiful rusty patina over the years, adding to the building’s character.
The photoshoot was a great success, as the venue provided the perfect setting for capturing the essence of the performers and their music. Additionally, the stunning backdrops really made for something unique for the artists. Also the ever-changing lighting inside the hall was perfect for creating a moody and atmospheric setting.
Conclusion:
The Crossness Pumping Station photoshoot achieved outstanding results with exceptional photo quality. Garnering five-star reviews from each artist involved, my interpersonal skills and friendly approach proved instrumental. In a short time I was able secure the venue, mobilise volunteers, and create a comfortable atmosphere. This allowed me to maximise the time of the artists and creatively utilise the unique environment.
Photos of each artist have since been used to promote concerts, rebrand a website, and promote upcoming album releases. Looking forward to future opportunities, this photography service blends technical expertise, artistic vision, and collaborative excellence. What’s more, it remained on budget and minimalised costs for the acts.

Check out the results of the shoots for yourself:
Top class bluesman Mississippi Macdonald was first up in the shoot. It was wonderful hearing stories of legendary players he met on the US blues trail.
Jimmy Regal and The Royals are a fantastic blues band from South London (which technically makes us neighbours!). The three humble lads have a great outlook towards preserving the blues while adding their own flavour.
Whilst Alice Armstrong is relatively new to releasing music her live pedigree is just astounding. Her voice transcends genre, with so much soul and blues, but also the ability to lift and amuse. There’s little doubt of a big future for Alice.
